What is PTFE?
PTFE is the abbreviation of polytetrafluoroethylene, it is a kind of linear polymer like polyethylene(PE）, but the hydrogen atoms are replaced with fluorine atoms, from the PTFE Molecular Structure chart, we can see the main carbon chain is surrounded by fluorine atoms and the carbon-fluorine key is extremely stable, this structure entitles the PTFE unique characteristics.
This material is discovered in 1983 by the DuPont Co, Teflon is the trademark brand for this material, so when we compare the Teflon and PTFE material, in fact, they are the same concept.
PTFE’s unique property
PTFE has many exclusive properties than other polymers, all of these lies in its unique structure:
- Very high working temperature, it works well at 260°C.
- Very high resistance to chemicals and solvents. It can sustain high acid, high alkali， and Strong oxidants.
- Non-stick characteristic and low friction surface. It decreases the pressure drop and saves energy.
- Very high electrical resistance.
- Resistance to weather, UV light, and corrosion.
- Inert, non-toxic, and bio-compatible.
PTFE hydraulic hose description
PTFE hydraulic hoses tend to be used in some particular scenarios, for instance, with the requirement of high chemical resistance, and high-temperature resistance.
PTFE hydraulic hoses have two plies unlike the conventional rubber counterparts, the inner tube is made of polytetrafluoroethylene which is directly in touch with hydraulic fluids, it can be compatible with almost any media and can sustain high temperatures up to 260°C.
The outer ply is braided reinforcement made of high-tensile stainless steel wire (SS 316), ensuring it can survive in a harsh environment.
Although PTFE has many advantages and can endure certain high working pressure, the working pressure top limit is only 2190 psi (15.1MPa) with an inner diameter of 1/4″, as the diameter increases, the W.P. decrease to 682 psi (4.7MPa) with an inner diameter of 1″.
Two types of the inner tube are available in our supply, one is the smooth inner wall, and the other is the corrugated inner tube, each of them has its advantages and disadvantages. Smooth PTFE hydraulic hoses have less friction and pressure loss than corrugated ones, but the latter has a more flexible preference than the former.
